I'm also from California and have been to Syria twice. I've used different airlines. If you useJordon Airlines there's less stops and it is cheaper.

I recommend taking Jordanian Royal Air from NYC/JFK non-stop to Amman then take a taxi to Damascus (around 10-20$ and about 2-3 hours). Make sure you have your visa before you arrive at the Syrian border. I'm not familiar with long term lodging but I stayed at a clean efficent well located hotel called "Future Hotel" between Ash'Sham Sq. and Nat. Archaelogical Museum. Syria is an amazing and fascinating country with wonderful, funny and generous people. I had a unforgettable trip there this summer. Spent over a month traversing the country all the while traveling solo. I Loved it.
Oliver W.
Los Angeles, Ca

HI,
I live in San Diego and the best Summer airline deal I found two years ago round-trip to Damascus was Aeroflot from LAX airport in Los Angeles. I paid approx $1200 roundtrip. Aeroflot uses their best planes for the LA to Moscow leg of the trip and they feed you well, but you then have to wait in the Moscow terminal for up to 8 hours for the Moscow to Damascus leg of the trip, for which you will fly on an older and smaller plane.
There are some Travel Agents in the LA area who can get you better deals, (get one of the free Arab newspapers at one of the ethnic Middle East supermarkets in LA as they are full of Middle East specialty travel agent Advertisements), I suggest you book your ticket early to get a better price and the travel dates you want, no matter what airline you choose.

I recommend Bab Touma as the place for an American to stay. You will feel more comfortable there, are close to everything and can walk in a few minutes to the heart of the Old City to experience all of its sights, sounds and historic treasures.

To rent a room in Bab Touma will cost 100$ per month. You can find cheaper but really limited space.

If you want your own bathroom and kitchen, you'll pay like 140$.

But most of foriegners I know pay 100$ a month.
Salam
Razan

Haramein is the best choice I think.

I'm not sure about the US, but from Canada the best bang for your buck is to go with Al Ittihad airlines, stay one night in UAE and then fly to Syria. Another option is Austrian Airlines, they have a special deal with Syrian Airlines, where half the trip in an Austrian plane, and the other is on a Syrian one. Expect to pay over $1100 for the trip..
