A man has walked straight into the new Syrian embassy in Beirut claiming to be the “new Syrian ambassador”. The problem is, Syria hasn’t got an ambassador in Beirut.
An impostor arrived at the building in Hamra claiming to be Syria’s top man in Lebanon. It turned out he wasn’t. But the Lebanese guards believed him – and let him in.
The man in a suit, and carrying a briefcase, walked past the security checks – before someone realised the error and kicked him out. He cooly got into a taxi and left.
The Syrian flag has been raised over the building for the first time – and a plaque outside displays the words “Embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic”.
It is staffed by three diplomats, who all arrived on Monday – the highest ranking Syrian there is a first secretary. Syria has yet to name its ambassador. The embassy is due to open next week.
Lebanon has not started work on its building in Damascus, and has not named an ambassador to Syria yet.
