Hamas, then, is at their last resort: they are using their own people as hostages. A great deal of information transmitted by Gazans to the Israelis must have been accurate for civilian casualties to remain under 30% of the total. I conclude, then, that without a cease-fire Hamas can sustain its fight only last a few days longer. Doubtless Hamas will survive at least a bit longer, as its top leadership is ensconced in Damascus and its second rank shelters from within Gaza's hospitals. But why should Hamas be granted any dignity or respect for provoking Israel and its subsequent conduct in battle?
