A million people have come out on to the streets of Damascus, to protest at the massacres in Gaza.
Interestingly, as well as the usual Syrian and Palestinian flags, plus photos of the president, protesters carried pictures of Hugo Chavez. The Venezuelan President kicked the Israeli ambassador out of his country a few days ago.
The are calling for the fighting to end, and for the Rafah border to be opened – in accordance with international law (according to Human Rights Watch) – to let civilians escape. That is a clear dig at Egypt, which has kept the border shut.
“Oh Mubarak, listen, listen, the Arab people will not kneel down,” they chanted.
At the end, hundreds of people headed to the Egyptian embassy on Abu Rumaneh – but they were stopped from getting close by Syrian riot police.
