Syrianair is being allowed to buy parts for two of its Jumbo Jets which have been grounded for years. And it seems this is just the start of the new era between Syria and America, with a whole range of sanctions being lifted.
The Boeing 747s were unsafe to fly – even by Syrian standards. But the Bush embargo prevented Syria buying essential safety parts.
So that meant Syrianair was flying across the world in just five aeroplanes.
Last year Syria finally abandoned American-made Boeings, and signed a deal with French President Nicolas Sarkozy to buy a huge new fleet of European Airbuses. The problem is, they won’t arrive for years.
But now Obama has allowed Syrianair to buy the parts to rehabilitate its two Boeing 747s. That will give some short-term relief before the Airbuses arrive.
Already the neo-cons are screaming “terrorist”. Apparently, the civilian jets could be used to…er, bomb Israel, or carry weapons!
