Barack Obama is giving just under one billion dollars in aid, to help Palestinians rebuild Gaza. Except that it is not being given to Gaza – and they are not allowed to use it for rebuilding.
Two-thirds of the cash will be given to the West Bank-based Fateh Authority, because Gazans can’t be trusted. The money is being used to repair the Authority’s $1.6 billion budget deficit – clearly that’s the priority for Palestinian people.
A paltry $300 million will be used for emergency relief work – nearly three months after most emergency relief work began. And that amount should just about make up for the UN emergency supplies which were destroyed in a single bombing on a UN facility.
But even that $300 million is in doubt. Israel is still preventing most humanitarian supplies from entering Gaza.
