Privatising the Damascus Old City

March 25th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

The big sell off continues. Rubbish collection is the latest state service to be privatised.

In the Old City men in orange outfits now clean the streets. They work for a new company called Swan.

Not only do they have new clothes, but there are more of them, and they use new smaller bins.

It comes in the week that the much delayed Damascus Stock Exchange launched. It is a symbol of Syria’s new embrace of the (almost) free market. It was supposed to open on March 8, until someone realised that was the day the country celebrates the anniversary of the socialist revolution.
