The Syrians who liberated Paris

April 6th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Politics

A fascinating documentary about the end of World War 2 is being broadcast tonight.

The Americans wanted an all-white victory in Europe. They didn’t want any black faces in the liberation push into Paris at the end of the war.

Eisenhower’s Chief of Staff wrote: “It is more desirable that the division mentioned above consist of white personnel.”

But the problem was, two-thirds of the Free French army was made up of Africans from the French colonies. They had been forced to fight in Europe. Seventeen thousand died.

So black Africans were deliberately taken out of the forces marching into Paris. But there just weren’t enough Frenchmen in the French army to fill the gaps.

So Spanish and Syrian troops were used instead.

More here, and you can listen to the documentary by clicking on listen live on this page, tonight at 10pm in Syria, 8pm UK.

I am curious about the Syrians part of all this, I have listened to the audio you referred to but could not make to the program, what did they actually say about the Syrian troops?

I can’t believe that, first Syrians march to liberate Paris, then they face the French army invading Syria.. some gratitude huh!

The French invasion of Syria took place before the second world war, not after. The pressure on the French to leave was political and not military a la Algerian style.

I wonder how someone can “liberate” a country that is colonizing him. And I wonder how one can “liberate” a country that forced him to go to its war.
P.S. where did my previous comment go?
