The UN Special Tribunal has RELEASED all four Lebanese suspects in the Hariri killing “at once”.
It has also ruled that they should be protected, to ensure they come to no harm.
Although they could still be indicted at a later date, this essentially clears Syria and renders the UN Special Tribunal meaningless.
The four men have been held without trial for three years. Lebanon thought they could fish for some evidence – the UN says there are no grounds for them to face trial.
They are: former head of General Security Maj Gen Jamil al-Sayyad, former chief of police Maj Gen Ali Hajj, former military intelligence chief Brig Gen Raymond Azar and Republican Guard commander Mustafa Hamdan.
Qifa Nabki in Beirut says there are already celebrations in the Shia southern suburbs.
Here’s how it all began, I wrote a post called “Police swoop on former Mukhabaraat heads in Beirut” on 30 August 2005.
