More accusations today that Britain doesn’t really care about Maryam Kallis, the British woman arrested in Syria on terror charges.
Legal campaigner Asim Qureshi draws stark comparisons between Maryam’s case and other UK citizens detained abroad. Anyone remember the ‘sex on the beach’ case in Dubai? There was immense pressure from the British media and government on Dubai to release the couple involved. And they were found guilty – Kallis hasn’t even been charged.
The claim is that Britain’s Foreign Office doesn’t care because Kallis is not white, and is being held on terror charges.
But then Britain can’t really claim the moral high ground on this. After supporting Guantanamo Bay for years, the UK then passed its own law permitting police to detain terror suspects they like for four weeks without charge.
