After a long closure, one of Damascus’s most elegant bars is opening again – and changing its name to Zen Lounge.

The Z-Bar was the symbol of the Beirutification of Damascus when it first opened up in the wake of the 2005 Syria-Lebanon split.
More and more Syrians were spending their weekends in Damascus, instead of driving over the border to an increasingly hostile Beirut. So what did they do? Build a mini-Beirut in west Damascus.
It was around this time that the Four Seasons hotel opened, prices increased and international restaurants like Scoozi started opening.
Z-Bar is an elegant rooftop bar – modelled on Beirut’s Sky Bar. It sits on top of the Umayed Palace hotel (opposite Cham Palace). Dressed in subtle black and silver with electro-jazz music playing, you can sit back and relax with a view over Jebl Qasioun.
Z-Bar reopens as Zen Lounge on 13 June.

“Dressed in subtle black and silver with electro-jazz music playing…”
I’m assuming you are talking about the decorations at the place and not yourself on a Thursday night?

Maysaloon – haha both!
Arab – refurbishment, and because it was too cold to go on the roof terrace in the winter.
