US Middle East envoy George Mitchell is planning a trip to Damascus.
He and his team have applied for Syrian visas, but no date has been set for the visit.
It comes days after Obama angered Syria by extending the Bush-imposed sanctions. So far, Obama has sent Acting Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman and White House Middle East expert Daniel Shapiro to Damascus.
Mitchell would be the highest-level American official to go to Syria since Barack Obama took office. But the American administration say although they have set the ball in motion, no details have been set, and he may not even end up going.
