Hariri buys votes

June 2nd, 2009 · 3 Comments · Lebanon

I don’t ever want to hear the tired old story that Syria/Hizbollah/(*insert bad guy here) brings bus loads of supporters to cheer at demonstrations.

Because Hariri’s thugs are PAYING for people to fly half way across the world in a desperate attempt at winning this election.

Who said you couldn’t buy votes in Lebanon!

tp-cgy-airport-waitingjpg“Corporate sponsors are paying for hundreds of supporters of the pro-Western Future Movement in Calgary and in other Canadian cities to vote on June 7, CBC News has learned. Dual citizens must be physically present in Lebanon to cast a ballot in its elections.

“This is a big election, and it is a lot of people who [would] love to vote but they cannot vote because of funds … so those companies are making it easy for them,” said Faouzi Salem, a Future Movement co-ordinator in Calgary.”

This is common knowledge, and is happening all over Canada; not just in a couple of cities. I know of a few families who went to Lebanon this year to vote.

This should not be allowed. If I live in Canada, what right do I have to tell the people there how to live? Just to spite them? But then again, the Lebanese are not unfamiliar when it comes to conning the benefits of multiple nations. Here in Canada, they are the biggest con artists available, and they always get caught. This voting while living in another country should be illegal.

It’s also worth noting that this is not happening only in Canada, but all over the world. Over 120,000 people have been given a free ticket to Lebanon to vote. There are strings attached, though. You need to have a ‘favorable’ background, meaning that you must be from a city that has clear support for Hariri, and you can’t be Shi’ite. I know of people whose claims for tickets to Lebanon were rejected because of their affiliation with the ‘Wrong’ parts of Lebanon.

Obviously, Hariri is desperate, and knows that his best bet is to reach out to refugees and ex-patriots living abroad, who are mostly Christian, who left the country due to the civil war in the first place. This is a risky move for him, since a large percentage of Christians are supporters of Michel Aoun, who is allied to Hezbollah, and is the leader of the opposition. He is no doubt paying for people who will also vote against him, and so he is hoping on attracting Sunnis and anti-Aoun Christians, which gives his plan only a slight positive.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Lebanese living in Syria (My family included), will be making their way across the border to vote for the opposition.

Simply put, Hariri has lost, and he pissed away over a billion dollars of stolen Lebanese money doing it.
