I don't think you can ever avoid the 'chinese manufacturers' when it comes to souveniers. However, it's up to the LOCALS to avoid purchasing these products and starting tacky souvenier shops at every corner (hello Prague!). Damascus is a city that can support responsible travel and there are already companies doing their little bit. Tourism can really help a destination if done in a responsible manner.
