On Palestine

August 1st, 2009 · No Comments · Politics

A collection of interesting articles which have appeared on Palestine over the past couple of days.

Qunfuz hits the nail on the head again:

“Their resistance, even when strictly aimed at military targets, or performed with stones, will be called terrorism. When we accept this nomenclature we will describe Israeli massacres as disproportionate responses. As if it were the ethnically cleansed, the victims of apartheid, the slaughtered and starved who initiate, and Zionism which responds.”

The Economist has the scoop, with an interview with Palestine’s Deputy Foreign Minister – Hamas member Ahmed Yousef:

“Hamas is very close on recognition of Israel,” he says, as well as heaping on the praise for Barack Obama.

Also in this week’s Economist, we find out that Olmert and Abbas were apparently on the verge of signing a peace deal. A deal which would have sold out millions of Palestinian refugees around the world, and their legal right to return to their homeland:

“Mr Abbas put a different slant on the offer, they were groping towards what some diplomats say might be a mutually acceptable formula: an acknowledgment of the Palestinians’ right of return that would largely be symbolic, rather than a passport for millions. Elsewhere, a figure of 30,000 returning Palestinians has been informally mooted.”
