Tonight is the night. Syria play India in the Nehru Cup final.
The Syrian team – despite fasting during all of their games – have made it into the final without conceding a single goal. They seem unstoppable.
But there is history here. Syria played India in the 2007 final – and lost.
Things look much better this time round. Syria are stronger, and India have lost their form. Two days ago, the two teams met in the group stages. Syria wanted to rest its best players, so it fielded a mainly reserve team – and still managed to win 1-0.
Syria has never managed to make it into the World Cup, and never got past the first stage of the Asian Cup. You have to go back to 1987 to find a big victory for the team – that’s when they won the Mediterranean Cup.
If Syria’s incredible story continues tonight, the Nehru Cup will be coming to Damascus for the first time ever.
