The European Union is promising help for Syria’s healthcare system.
The EU-funded Health Services Modernisation Program wants to double the amount spent on healthcare in Syria. At the moment, US$60 per Syrian citizen is spent every year – the plan is to increase that to US$120.
The Syrian Health Ministry says it needs to reorganise its financial systems, and prevent money being wasted.
The World Health Organisation says that in Arab countries, 3-4% of the national budget is spent on healthcare. In the West, that figure is around 10%.
