Bank Audi has launched Syria’s first debit card.
The Mastercard can be used anywhere in the world, and withdraws funds directly from the user’s bank account.
It’s a big step forward, because until now, only credit cards had been available – and were subject to strict application criteria. Syria is a low credit country – there is very little commercially available credit (to consumers or businesses). While this has hampered economic growth, it also has protected Syria to a large extent from the global credit crisis.

That’s great news Sasa, I could use one of these. Do you know if other banks followed suite? like Bemo or Syria and Overseas?

Not yet, but I’m sure they will. The problem is that it’s still not easy to open a bank account, and so few people have one.

Byblos Bank Syria doesn’t have a debit card. The Mastercard you are referring to is a credit card.

Byblos have a debit card, issued IN Syria (not Lebanon)??? That’s strange because I was asking all the banks if I could open an account with a debit card just this June, and no-one said yes.
