More wild claims in Der Spiegel

November 9th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Politics

First it was the evidence that Hizbollah had killed Hariri, now Der Spiegel has uncovered Syria’s dirty nuclear secret.

But all is not what it seems. The Hizbollah article was almost immediately – and widely – discredited, coming as it did days before the June 7 Lebanese elections. And the man behind that piece, Erich Follath, has put his name to this wild speculation.

I will call it speculation because the long wandering ramble of an article contains nothing more than Israeli and American claims. No smoking gun, no informants, no third-country handing over dusty documents. Just the same old Israeli story we’ve heard for the past couple of years.

If the 7 page article does anything, it gives away some of the workings of the Israeli paranoia machine. Although this now widely-repeated story of the Syrian computer in a London hotel room seems like the stuff of Agatha Christie novels. Which is exactly the kind of thing Erich Follath should be writing.

Out of curiosity, what did you think of the Seymour Hersh article about the incident from a few years? I remember him concluding that it was some sort of chemical weaponry that was being manufactured.

Can’t remember it. Although most of what Sy Hersh says seems to be proven right a few years later (remember his accusations of the Hariri-armed Sunni gangs in Lebanon).
