Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has revealed how close George W Bush was to invading and occupying Syria.
Phil Sands reports in The National that Blair has discussed formerly private conversations for the first time in his newly published memoirs:
“He would have worked through the whole lot, Iraq, Syria, Iran, dealing with all their surrogates in the course of it – Hizbollah, Hamas, etc,” Blair says.
America accused Syria of acting as a spoiler in Iraq – refusing to adequately seal its border, and prevent Al-Qaeda aligned militants cross into Iraq to bog down the US. Syria always denied the charge.
If America hadn’t been pinned down in Iraq, those tanks would have almost certainly rolled into Damascus to spread their carnage.
