Quran burning – the aftermath

September 9th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Culture

Get ready. A new nightmare is about to begin.

As if the cartoon protests weren’t enough, a new wave of violence is just over the other side of the horizon. Just like last time, a group of reactionaries in the west are dressing up their hatred in the language of free speech.

Last time, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten decided to publish a collection of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed variously as a suicide bomber and a blind axe-man. Interestingly, the suicide bomber was wearing a turban, that traditional item of Muslim headwear.

But the way that the cartoonists portrayed Muslims as killers was ignored by the sheep-like protesters. They were more worried about the fact that the Prophet had been drawn at all. (Muslims don’t believe the Prophet or God should be pictured).

This time, the plan is a lot more serious. A group of extremist Christians in Florida are planning to burn the Quran, the word of God (incidentally, the same God they believe in).

Last time, people died. Syrian bloggers were united in condemning the violence. But it still happened.

It is very likely that people could die as a result of this gang of reckless, hate-filled nutcases this weekend. Condemnation of the church group is coming in from around the world. But it will still happen.

Happy Eid everyone.
