Singing for Syria in London

July 8th, 2011 · No Comments · Culture

It was explicitly apolitical. Sing for Syria was a charity event that gathered people from across the spectrum to raise money for Syrian refugees stranded in Turkey.

Hundreds of people turned up at the west London venue to donate, listen to music and take part in an auction. £2000 was raised in the space of a few hours.

Lebanese super-producer Zeid Hamdan was on stage, DJing for Egyptian wonderchild Maryam Saleh (above) and Palestinian oud-player Tamer Abu Ghazaleh. If you haven’t heard Maryam’s amazing voice, you need to.

The threesome were also the opening act for Shubbak (that’s where this pic was taken), a month-long festival of Arab culture taking place across London. Tonight, there’s a collection of short Syrian and Palestinian films in Ladbroke Grove. Go and support London’s Arab creative scene. The full programme is online.
