Syria News Wire

The Syria News Wire is written from Damascus and London. It was the fourth Syrian blog to appear on the internet – back in 2004. It is a Lonely Planet favourite, award nominated, Toot-ified blog, which gets about 15,000 hits a month.

Click on any of the logos in the sidebar (on the right) to see some of the press coverage about the Syria News Wire – from the Telegraph, through to Syria Today.

In 2008, Damascus became the Arab Capital of Culture. The year was packed full of events. Every month, a programme was published – but it didn’t hit the streets until half the month had passed.

In Damascus, that doesn’t matter. We find out what’s happening by word of mouth. And the same goes for news, or plans for the city’s development.

This site puts some of those whispers on to the net.

News from the streets of Damascus, and beyond.

This is a guide to the images used across the Syria News Wire.

header_4On the front page: the rebirth of Medhat Pasha, in the Old City of Damascus.
header_2On the individual article pages: the Umayed Mosque at sunset.

header_5On the error pages: taxi passing Sabah Bahraat/Central Bank.

header_3On the about/history/images pages: spices in Souq Al Bouzariya, Damascus Old City.
header_4-1On the monthly archive pages: the Occupied Syrian Golan Heights. Israel has occupied the Syrian territory since 1967. The photo was taken from the Syrian city of Quneitra, which was liberated in 1973. You are looking at the barbed wire fence which marks the start of the occupation. 20,000 Syrians are trapped behind this fence, separated from their families for a generation. Thousands more live as refugees in Damascus and Aleppo.

This photo was originally used across the whole of the Syria News Wire from Nov 2008 to May 2009.

    Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am part of a team of 40 volunteers that is attempting to turn 09.09.09 into a global charity event in the internet. We are collecting stories from around the world written by normal people about their experiences on that day. The best stories will be published in a book, the proceeds of which will be donated to charity.

We believe that a global diary of this kind can help break down stereotypes about other cultures. A normal daily event in Germany may seem boring to a German, but for someone in India, it is interesting to read a “normal” story like that, which took place somewhere else on the globe.

This project was initiated by a group of students in Germany. We already have had a good amount of media coverage and lots of positive feedback here, where several hundreds of people plan to send in their personal story from 09/09/09.

We would be very thankful if your newspaper on your part of the planet would report about our project. Our idea can only succeed if as many people as possible hear about it and participate AND WE HOPE TO RECEIVE STORIES FROM SYRIA. With your help, the word can be spread around the globe.

Please visit our website It gives detailed information about the project in 8 languages. Of course we are happy to answer any questions you may have and would be thrilled to receive a confirmation email, should you decide to report about it. We can also provide you with photographs for publication.

Thank you for reading our email and many greetings to you from Germany.

    Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am an Afghan but my mother is from Halab of Syria,
It is more than 20 years that I am living with my family in Goettingen city of Germany.
It is around one year that I am watching your Drama channel.I am following it from the beginning of Ramadan and enjoying its drama with deep sense and feeling.
I like the three dramas most of all: Asad Waraq, Ale Rai and Babe Hara.
I like to see the beside programs too like Akhbar e Fan and two enjoyable interviews programs with your artist.
I knew them very well and feel like being in Damascus. I visited Damascus in 1985 and met my late aunt there.
I hope to visit there again and enjoy it more.

I’m amazed, I have to admit. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s both
equally educative and entertaining, and without a doubt, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too few folks are speaking intelligently about. I’m very
happy I stumbled across this in my hunt for something regarding this.

And on this post About | Syria News Wire. I was actually moved enough to drop a thought

if you don’t mind. Could it be only me or do some of these remarks
look as if they are left by brain dead folks? 😛 And, if you are posting at other places,

U.S. approves arms shipment to Syrian rebels in secret
A majority in Congress agree that the United States should support “moderate” insurgents.

TIMELINE: Get an overview of the conflict in Syria

U.S. sends light weapons to “moderate” insurgents in Syria, and Congress has secretly assured that the delivery is financed several months.
It reveals American and European security officials to Reuters.
The weapons are primarily sent to non-Islamist groups in the southern part of Syria via Jordan. Deliveries contains several light weapons, but also more powerful things, such as missiles that are specifically designed to hit and destroy military vehicles.
    Vote in camera
money for arms supplies are sold on the U.S. budget for 2014, and approval was voted through in Congress behind closed doors.
It is unclear when exactly the vote took place, but funding for the Department of Defense was voted through in December.
The seemingly constant flow of U.S. weapons across the Syrian border marks a change from last summer when U.S. military aid to the Syrian rebels were put on hold because of the fear that the weapons would end up in the hands of Islamic militants.
READ ALSO Radical: UN should threaten military action this summer
An anonymous U.S. official with knowledge of the latest developments told Reuters that both intelligence agencies as members of Congress are now more confident that the weapons falling into the hands of those who are called “moderate” insurgents, and not militant jihadists.
It was alleged that the moderate groups have managed to gain influence in the southern part of Syria and oust groups with ties to the terrorist network al-Qaeda. Islamists dominate the other hand, in the north and east.
Neither the U.S. government or intelligence agencies have wanted to comment on queries from Reuters.
    Peace negotiations in Geneva
information gets out, just as representatives of both the Syrian government and opposition negotiating peace with the UN Special Envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, in the Swiss city of Geneva.
The parties are reportedly far apart, but have been agreed on little things. For example, get women and children apparently allowed to leave the war-torn city of Homs, which is controlled by rebels but surrounded by the Syrian army.

At the same time seems a deal to allow humanitarian organizations providing relief to Homs’ population to be so imminent that the UN has made a convoy ready so that it can move in as soon as a temporary ceasefire is agreed.

One could ask what the purpose of the design feature could be.
One cup coffeemakers brew directly in to the thermal mug to
be able to preserve the drink’s temperature. It’s also
still possible to buy coffee cones and run boiling water through one
inch order to prepare a cup of coffee but while you
understand this method of making coffee just isn’t for everyone and might be dismissed by plenty
of people due on the inconvenience and primitiveness with this method.

First off I want to say excellent blog! I had a quick question which I’d like
to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find out how you
center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing.
I’ve had a tough time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out.
I do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first
10 to 15 minutes are usually lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips?
    Many thanks!
